Hi Martin:

Met you at Mission Marsh tonight. Great photo gallery you have here! Much better than anything I can do. Can't leave hyperlink with my message. Just go to Flickr and find my username: jardinedave.

Martin -- looks like you've had a productive fall so far, can't believe I just missed the stilt sandpipers! Just wanted to let you know there is a Nelson's sharp tailed sparrow on the sand point at the mouth of the wolf river. Keep an eye out if you're heading to Hurkett in the next while.

Stunning work here, Martin. Very much looking forward to a return visit. I'd like to encourage you to allow EXIF data as well.

Hi Martin, thanks for you comments on my galleries. I thought you might like to know though, that I do not use an SLR. The canon S5 IS, which is the one I am using now, is a point and shoot with a 12X optical zoom. I also use in-front-of-the-lens teleconverters and close-up lenses.

The teleconverter gives me 18X optical zoom, which would be about the equivalent of a 600mm lens on a non-digital SLR. Your camera with a 300mm lens would be the equivaqlent of a 450 mm lens on a non-digital SLR, so in fact I have a magnification advantage over you. Of course my camera is only 8 megs (the previous S3 IS was 6 megs, and most of my photos on pbase were taken with that camera), so the 10 megs you have in the Nikon, plus the better quality sensors, more than make up for the lack in magnification.

The main thing is that if I was using a 72mm lens on an SLR, I would have to get impossibly close to the birds to get good results. I love the Canon S5 IS. It is very compact and light weight, very easy to use for both telephoto and macro photos, and costs a fraction of what I would pay to get the equivelent in an SLR.

Thanks Martin, your ducks and geese gallery looks amazing. It would be very nice if you can post your equipment info!
